Unit Plan: The Fabulous Four Save the Earth from Chemron Objective: SWBAT demonstrate knowledge of global warming and pollution and their effects on the health of the Earth. Language Objective: Students will read, discuss and write about the affects of global warming and pollution on the health of the Earth. Concept: The Fabulous Four. There are four Super Heroes. Keeper of the Water, Keeper of the Air, Keeper of the Earth, and Keeper of All Living Things. Each Super Hero depends upon the others to do their work, so they have to respect each other’s work, collaborate, and communicate. Students will work in groups of four, each child taking on a Super Hero identity. They will embark on their duties through reading lessons of chosen materials that support the subject matter, movies and field trips. Like super heroes will receive lessons and support on their topics. Super Hero groups will then work together to solve the problems presented. Each Super Hero has a job to do: Ø Keeper of the Water will work to stop water pollution brought on by chemicals and oil that spill into the water. Ø Keeper of the Air will work to stop air pollution from engines and factories that blow waste into the atmosphere. Ø Keeper of the Earth will work to stop the eroding of land, destruction of marsh lands, and forests through man’s ever-expanding growth. Ø Keeper of All Living Things will work to stop extinction of animals and fish from the ever growing expansion of man’s footprint which destroys the ecosystems. The Story: The Evil Chemron company is responsible for a huge oil spill off the coast of Florida. Thousands of gallons of oil per hour are gushing out and are in danger of being delivered throughout the oceans via the gulf stream. Sensitive tidal marshes and white sand beaches are in danger of being destroyed. In the Andes Mountains, coal has been discovered and Chemron is beginning to blast the tops off the mountains in the worst strip mining operation in History. The rainforests of Brazil are being plundered by Chemron to grow corn for ethanol. The Super heroes’ mission is to stop Chemron’s evil destruction of the Earth and find alternative sources of energy for human use. Super heroes will have to work closely together as their powers are useless if they work alone. Vocabulary: ecosystem, biome, pollution, atmosphere, erosion, brackish, marsh, bayou, deforestation. Students will work together using Google Docs to gather information and communicate ideas. Final outcome will be a presentation by the team of their findings and solutions. The output is the choice of the students. It could be a film, comic book, a play, or a Google Presentation.
